BIOGRAPHY
Interdisciplinary artist, performer, curator and lecturer.
Yaryna Shumska works in the fields of performance art, painting, graphics, installation, and dance. She explores the concept of presence expressed through the body and the visual sign it creates, presence as a manifestation of the "here and now", the spoken and unsaid, what we say out loud and what remains between the lines.
PhD. Yaryna Shumska graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts (LNAA). She was a grant holder of the "Gaude Polonia" scholarship program of the Minister of Culture of Poland, she was shortlisted for the Young Ukrainian Artists Competition “MYXi” (2015), the II Youth Biennale of Contemporary Art of Ukraine (2019). She is an author of solo exhibitions and art projects in Ukraine, Poland, and Spain. She participated in numerous exhibitions, performance art festivals, and conferences in Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Norway, Japan, Thailand, Canada, USA etc.
She is a co-organizer and co-curator of the School of Performance (2019, 2024, 2025), the online residencies In Place and Performance Archive. Ukraine (2020), and the International festival Days of Performance Art in Lviv in collaboration with the Czech FNAF (2024, 2025). She is a co-founder of the Department of Contemporary Art Practices (LNAA), where she worked from 2018 to 2024, where she has been a guest teacher since 2025. and she led the Visiting Artist Studio in the Faculty of Fine Art at Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic, 2022).
Her recent works have been presented at the festival NO W HERE #4 (Goslar, Germany), Stories. The world is more complicated than our truths about it (Plock, Poland), Nostre Mar (Perpignan, France), Venice International Performance Art Week (VIPAW) (Venice, Italy), Matatoio (Rome, Italy), and Arctic Action (Svalbard, Norway).
