HOLDING ONE'S BREATH

HOLDING ONE'S BREATH

Series of paintings. 2024-2025. Acrylic on canvas. Lviv, Ukraine.

The series is the result of performative works that have appeared since 2021.

It is a part of interciplinary project "Holding One's Breath" curated by D. Skrynnyk-Myska at the Lviv municipal art center 7.08-17.09.2025.

I address the themes of loss, absence, death and emptiness. The presence and absence of a human being is manifested in various situations. One of its signs is clothing, which indicates its size, character and preferences, tells its story, and indicates whether this story is still ongoing. Clothing becomes a symbolic memorial of a temporality.

This series documents a decade-long evolution of the Ukrainian domestic space. What began in 2009 as a classical study of form, light, and tradition has undergone a radical conceptual transformation.

My approach involves returning to canvases started years ago and intervening with contemporary marks—checks, price tags, labels that ruthlessly mark “art” with their pragmatism. At the same time, there are handwritten notes here, usually created at home, that are a memory of relatives, of people who are or were nearby at the time.

This process bridges the gap between a peaceful past and a defiant present.

CONCRETE WALLS

What seems to be nothing or invisible has shapes and shadows anyway. This series is dominated by grey colours and geometric forms ruined by layers. Something was destroyed and something was born.

The period of Covid-19 was a time of anxiety but also it became a time of silence and calm. I had never worked so fruitfully as then.

It began in March. The windows were open, the studio was flooded with sunlight. Sometimes I would draw the curtains and watch the shadows – my figure was walking among the squares and rectangles that, like a city, were projected onto the floor.
